March 1-3, 2011: Resurgent Republic Survey—Nationwide poll solicits the public۪s views on whether to protect or cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
“(Now I would like to read you several pairs of statements that might be made by policymakers about government spending and the budget, and have you tell me, for each pair, which one you agree with more.)…Statement A: Congressman A says we should not balance the budget on the backs of our seniors and the poor. We need to cut back federal spending, but Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid should be off limits. Statement B: Congressman B says we will never get the deficit under control without dealing with Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, because those three programs make up more than half of all federal domestic spending….(If Answered statement A/statement B, ask:) Do you strongly agree with that statement or somewhat agree with that statement?”
37% Strongly agree statement A
16% Somewhat agree statement A
18% Somewhat agree statement B
23% Strongly agree statement B
