Many Americans Believe Circumstances, not Work Ethic, Determine Wealth

A new poll from Pew Research Center explored what Americans believe are the determinants of wealth. The poll found that 65 percent of respondents believe that having greater advantages in life leads people to be rich, while 33 percent believe that working harder has led people to be rich. Additionally, 71 percent of respondents stated that people are poor because they have faced more obstacles in life and 26 percent believed that people are poor because they have not worked as hard as people who are rich. Respondents’ views have shifted since 2018, with significantly more now citing increased life advantages as the greatest determining factor for why a person is rich.
