Hundreds of tenants are being kicked out of Des Moines affordable housing units. Advocates say it’s a crisis.
“Instead, the apartments will be emptied for costly renovations that will put monthly rents out of reach for current tenants and many low-wage workers in Des Moines. It’s a repeated scenario as developers buy up so-called “naturally occurring” affordable housing — buildings that draw lower rents because of their age, and, quite often, quality and condition — and invest millions to remodel them so they can raise rents and profits.”
