A high-quality universal pre-K program could significantly reduce racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps among America’s children, according to a new report from the Center for American Progress. How Much Can High-Quality Universal Pre-K Reduce Achievement Gaps? finds that universal pre-K would nearly close the achievement gap in reading between black and Hispanic children and their white classmates, and would reduce math and reading disparities among low-income students by as much as 40 percent. The authors argue that national universal pre-K is “a critical first step toward creating equity in access to early education.”
