Harris County’s guaranteed income program received more than 82,000 applications. 2 percent of those will receive payments

“Only about 2% of low-income Houston-area residents who applied for the county’s Guaranteed Income Program will actually receive those payments, according to county data. The application portal closed Feb. 9, with more than 82,000 applications submitted. About 90% of those applications were identified as Black or Hispanic households. Only 1,928 households will actually receive the monthly $500 stipend. The program will provide low-income families and households in select Harris County zip codes with direct and unconditional financial support for basic household needs like rent, groceries and transportation, according to the Uplift Harris program.”
