Who Gets Time Off? Predicting Access to Paid Leave and Workplace Flexibility
Workers who are most in need of paid sick days and flexible scheduling are least likely to have them, according to a new report from the Center for American Progress. Who Gets Time Off? Predicting Access to Paid Leave and Workplace Flexibility finds that nearly 40 percent of all employees in the U.S. lack access to any paid sick days, and that low-wage workers and those with children or elder care responsibilities are unlikely to have paid leave. Black and Latino workers are less likely than white workers to have access to paid sick days, even when controlling for age, education, and occupation, according to the report. The authors recommend guaranteeing all workers the right to accrue paid sick leave and allowing employees the right to request scheduling flexibility.
