Free Med School Won’t Solve the Doctor Shortage

Today, the vast majority of med students come from wealthier, urban communities. Only one in 20 comes from the bottom economic quintile; more than half come from the top quintile. Few come from rural areas. True, high-achieving students from lower-income backgrounds may find medical school more accessible if they don’t have to pay for it. But the correlation between income and academic achievement has only tightened in the last half-century.”
