Food Insecurity Among College Students
About 3.3 million college students were potentially eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in 2016 but did not participate, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office. Under federal law, many full-time college students are ineligible for the program, but exceptions include parents of young children and students who work at least 20 hours per week. The report recommends that the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, which administers SNAP, clarify and share information about student eligibility for government food assistance.
