Expanding and Improving Work-based Learning in Community Colleges

Posted on

A study conducted at the Urban Institute investigated work-based learning (WBL) programs at community colleges by analyzing national data and conducting interviews at several institutions. The researchers explored how these programs can be strengthened to better prepare students, especially those from highly marginalized populations, for jobs and to better support businesses in recruiting highly qualified talent.  Researchers found that while WBL is expanding across the country, a greater focus on measurement and data collection is needed to assess the effectiveness of various WBL models and evaluate the progress of these programs. Increasing evaluation efforts can lead to improved outcomes, especially for students of color, and can help close gaps in job training and access to career opportunities.
