Diabetes Medication Affordability and Use Increased in States with Medicaid Expansion

A new study from Health Affairs finds that low-income people are better able to afford diabetes medication when living in states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Medicaid programs in the 30 states that expanded eligibility saw a roughly 40 percent increase in the number of prescriptions filled for diabetes drugs. The study attributes the increase to lower out-of-pocket costs for previously uninsured patients.
