Congressional budget battle expected with emergency SNAP benefits set to expire
“More than 40 million Americans receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). During the pandemic, those who qualified for benefits received even more in what was called an ’emergency allotment.’ The extra dollars helped reduce poverty by 10% and child poverty by 14%, according to an Urban Institute study but with the end of the public health emergency, those additional benefits are also going away. The upcoming changes are setting the stage for another battle over spending on Capitol Hill.”
