Community group leader sees link with poverty, gun violence
“As parts of Northwest Indiana continue to be plagued by gun violence, including recent shootings of children, community organizers are struggling to make sense of it. ‘For me, I feel a very specific sorrow,’ said Lorrell Kilpatrick, co-organizer of Black Lives Matter of Northwest Indiana. ‘You think about children in all that pain, it’s all terrible.’ The latest incidents occurred Monday night when an 8-year-old girl and a 9-year-old-boy were shot in separate attacks in Gary. The girl was shot when a bullet crashed through the window of a residence in the 2100 block of Chase Street, striking her on the left side.”
