Most Colleges Out of Reach For Low-Income Students

After accounting for the cost of living and financial aid, more than 95 percent of colleges are unaffordable for low-income students, according to a recent report from the Institute for Higher Education Policy. Limited Means, Limited Options: College Remains Unaffordable for Many Americans finds that even for moderate-income students, a majority of four-year institutions are unaffordable even after considering financial aid. The authors call for strengthening the federal Pell Grant program and boosting state investments in financial aid programs.
