Carlsbad approves limited motel voucher program for homeless

Posted on

“The Carlsbad City Council approved a pilot motel voucher program last week that will allow homeless individuals or families to stay in local motels one night at a time.

Social workers will visit the recipients each morning to evaluate their efforts to secure services and permanent housing, and will determine whether additional one-night vouchers should be issued.

‘We have an obligation to help them,’ said Councilmember Keith Blackburn.

Assistance should only be provided to homeless people who are willing to work toward improving their situation, Blackburn said. Police officers on the city’s homeless outreach team will assure the vouchers are not issued to anyone trying to take advantage of the program.”
