California moves to make family leave easier to get and better paying

“California’s Paid Family Leave program, the first in the country, took effect in 2004. It is funded by employees through payroll deductions — look for ‘CASDI’ on your pay stubs. You may qualify for the program if you work for an employer of any size, in the public or private sector, or even for yourself, so long as you have recently contributed to the program.”
