The boards of America’s most powerful foundations are filled with wealthy, privately-educated white men
“The boards of the country’s most powerful foundations all look the same. That’s the conclusion of a major study of 20 of the country’s largest foundations and their 232 trustees by the ‘The Chronicle of Philanthropy,’ a Washington, D.C., periodical. It found that 72% of trustees are Caucasian, 15% are African-American, 6% are Asian, 5% are Latino and 1% are from other ethnic groups. What’s more, 63% are male. More than half (56%) have a Ph.D., an MBA, or a law degree, and nearly four in five trustees graduated from private colleges in the U.S., with 40% earning an Ivy League credential. It said the profile of trustees governing the wealthiest U.S. grant-makers does not reflect the diversity as it relates to class, race, and gender.”
