April 20 Forum – Able-Bodied Adults, Work, and Food Assistance: What Are States Doing, and Is It Working?

Posted on

The number of Americans receiving food assistance through SNAP has nearly doubled since 2005, from 25.6 million to 45.7 million in 2015. During the recession, the federal government waived the work requirement for some SNAP recipients in areas with especially high unemployment, but that requirement will be reinstated this month in many states. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback will deliver a keynote, followed by a panel discussion on the effect of the work waivers on employment, poverty, and incomes. Speakers include Josh Archambault, senior fellow at the Foundation for Government Accountability; Mary Mayhew, commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services; Angela Rachidi, research fellow at AEI; and Jason Turner, executive director of the Secretaries’ Innovation Group. The event will be held at AEI in Washington, D.C., from 12-1:30 p.m. EDT. Click here to register.
