Labor force participation rates among working-aged men are lower than average in both large cities and smaller rural areas, according to a report from the Brookings Institution. America’s Male Unemployment Crisis is Both Urban and Rural finds that men in large suburbs are most likely to be employed, while isolated rural areas and dense cities face high rates of male unemployment. The report finds that the male unemployment rate in the rural regions of states such as California and Virginia is comparable to the rates in Midwestern cities such as Cleveland and Detroit.
