The Teacher Pay Gap is Wider Than Ever

Public school teachers’ wages are 17 percent lower than those of comparable workers, making it more difficult for struggling schools to retain quality teachers, according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute. The Teacher Pay Gap is Wider Than Ever finds that even when benefits are included, teachers’ compensation lags more than 11 percent behind comparable workers. The report includes the ratio of teachers’ wages to wages of other college graduates in each state, finding that teacher pay is more than 25 percent lower in 18 states.
