A Criminal Justice Reform Agenda for 2017

A new report from the Brookings Institution lays out a criminal justice policy agenda for the next president and Congress, including education and job training for inmates and local police reform. Criminal Justice Reform: Issues and Options for the Next President reviews the data on crime rates, the rapidly expanding U.S. prison population, and the rash of police killings that have garnered significant attention in the last few years. The authors argue that regardless of the outcome of the presidential election, “there are opportunities for bi-partisan leadership that did not exist even a few years ago,” including federal legislation on police training and reducing sentences for low-level drug offenders.
