The ways in which the legal system intersects with the issues of poverty and opportunity has become an increasing area of focus for poverty advocates and scholars.

 

Crime and exposure to violence within a community has significant impacts on life outcomes for children. Further, mass incarceration and its disproportionate impact on low-income individuals and communities of color can also exacerbate existing inequalities. Many experts are focusing on ways to limit recidivism and help individuals successfully transition out of the justice system and back into civil society.
